ERG in Sicily
Sport in Sicily
Rinascita Melillese and Priolo Calcio are safety culture ambassadors on the football pitches of the Promotion and Prima Categoria footballing levels in Sicily: the logo of ERG and ISAB’s “Progettosicurezza” (Safety Project) is on the shirts of the Priolo and Melilli football teams which compete in the regional league championships at the Promozione and Prima Categoria levels.

ERG and ISAB launched the “Progettosicurezza” in 2009; it is a series of activities aimed at the continuous improvement of numerous aspects to do with safety, health protection and safeguarding the environment. The programme, aimed at promoting and consolidating a real “culture of safety”, engages the staff of the two companies as well as the staff of the external firms that work for ERG and ISAB.
The culture of safety is an important asset to pass on to the local area within the scope of the Social Responsibility commitments of the two companies. Indeed, ERG and ISAB have always developed initiatives, by collaborating with schools and institutions, aimed at building awareness amongst pupils in the province of Syracuse, such as for example “A helmet is worth a life” (Un casco vale una vita), in which ERG and ISAB worked alongside the Carabinieri Corps, and “SicurezzAmica”, in collaboration with the Fire Brigade, both of which are part of the “2011 School Project”.
The idea of putting the “Progettosicurezza” logo alongside those of ERG and ISAB on the Rinascita Melillese and Priolo Calcio shirts derives from the wish to spread the values of safety, which are based on respect for the rules and for lawfulness, through the world of amateur football.
ERG and ISAB have been enthusiastically supported in this undertaking by the football clubs of Priolo and Melilli, with which the companies have successfully collaborated for several years; the two teams have decided that in addition to their commitment towards achieving outstanding results during the new football season, they will also commit themselves to turning their players, managers and staff into role models for values such as lawfulness and safety. These values are a common asset that is characteristic of the area around the industrial district and, by associating them with the positive values of sport, they can be enhanced through good behaviour on and off the pitch.
G.S.Trogylos Basket Priolo
ERG is the official sponsor of GS Trogylos Basket Priolo, a basketball club that this year is celebrating its 25th championship in the women’s Serie A1 (Top Division). It has a prize record that includes two gleaming championship shields and a Euroleague Women’s cup (formerly European Cup for Women’s Champions Clubs).
U.S. Siracusa
ERG and ISAB have renewed their sponsorship contract with football club U.S. Siracusa for the next three football seasons.
ERG is the sponsor of the 20th "Archimede and Electra" Trophy
For 20 years now, the "Archimede ed Elettra" football trophy has been an established date in the youth football scene in the province of Syracuse. Set up in 1990, the trophy, organised by the ERG ASD (Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica, Amateur Sports Association), sees ERG in the traditional role of sponsor.
The matches of the seven-a-side football tournament for schoolboys and five-a-side football tournament for schoolgirls are played on the football fields of the ERG Sports Centre in Syracuse.
On 11 March this year, the opening ceremony was held as always at the Planet Theatre in Syracuse; during the event the two Trophy mascots were announced and a prize was also awarded for the “most sporting” banner, chosen from those created in a competition among participating schools.
This year, the 20th edition will involve pupils from 24 schools in the province of Syracuse and will be organised by the ASD ERG together with the provincial section and the regional delegation of the FIGC (Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio, Italian Football Federation).
Gianni Rivera, unforgettable champion of Italian football in the sixties and seventies and today chairman of the youth and schools division of the FIGC, was the special guest at the opening event of the 20th “Archimede ed Elettra” Football Trophy, in Syracuse. Riccardo Garrone, the chairman of Sampdoria and honorary chairman of the ERG Group, also took part in the event, which has traditionally been sponsored by ERG and ISAB.
A real celebration of sport to celebrate the 20th anniversary of an event which has become a sporting classic in the schools world, in the course of which the mascots of the two tournaments for boys’ and girls’ football were presented and prizes were awarded to pupils participating in their chosen competitions.
The grand final of the “Archimede ed Elettra” Football Trophy was on 6 May 2011. Totally new this year was the super final between the winning teams of the tournaments and the “Ravano ERG” sister trophy, which was played in Genoa, Liguria, on 14 May.

Classical drama at Syracuse: ERG is the first private partner in the INDA Foundation (Italian Ancient Drama Foundation)
ERG is the first private partner in INDA, the Italian Ancient Drama Foundation, an organisation that has been putting on classical drama performances at the Greek Theatre of Syracuse ever since it was founded in 1911.
The INDA Board of Directors, in fact, granted ERG’s request to become a sustaining partner, a position it will keep throughout the entire term of the present Board.
ERG, which has traditionally been the sponsor of the classical performances at the Greek Theatre of Syracuse, considered the main cultural event in Sicily, thus strengthens the bonds even more tightly with the area, with which it entered into an alliance that is now more than 30 years old.

Sustainability at School
The Marine Advices project by the Arezzo della Targia Nautical College wins the price for "Enhancement of the local area" at the BIZ Factory in Lecce.
Syracuse, 21 June 2011 – Marine Advices, the project carried out by the youngsters of the “Arezzo della Targia” Nautical College in Syracuse which, after winning the regional phase of “Business in Action” (Impresa in Azione) and participating in the eighth edition of BIZ Factory, won the Edenred price for the “Enhancement of the Local Area” (Valorizzazione del Territorio Locale). The success of the Syracuse youngsters took place in the event planned by Junior Achievement Italy, which saw 150 pupils from high schools from all over Italy meet in Lecce to compete in the field of young entrepreneurs with 16 original ideas for business.
“With our feet firmly on the ground but always close to mariners” is the slogan that was chosen for the Marine Advices project, which allows the youngsters from the Syracuse Nautical College to offer an integrated package of land and sea services for pleasure boats and for the small yachts in transit and staying for the season in the port of Syracuse. A front-end process between seafarers and land operators working in the field of maritime services, of the supply of products and of the provision of services in general that does not spurn the original range of services of a touristic and cultural nature.

The youngsters, who, together with their companions from the “Fermi” Technical Secondary School, represented Sicily, which took part for the first time in the national “Business in Action” event, were awarded prizes by a judging panel chaired by Prof. Carlo Alberto Carnevale Maffé, a lecturer in Strategy at the SDA Bocconi, and made up of a team of ten judges.
“Business in Action” is an initiative realised in the secondary schools of Syracuse by Junior Achievement Italy as part of ERG and ISAB’s “School Project” (Progetto Scuola), which is reserved for pupils of schools in the Province of Syracuse. More than a thousand pupils from local school groups and from middle and secondary schools took part in the “2011 School Project” and were involved in four projects: “Mus-E”, reserved for local school groups; “SicurezzAmica” , reserved for youngsters in the third year of middle schools in Priolo, Melilli, Augusta and Sortino in collaboration with the National Fire Brigade; “A helmet is worth a life” (Un casco vale una vita) in collaboration with the Carabinieri police and “Business in Action”.
» Junior Achievement 2010
For the third school year, the ERG Group, a partner of Junior Achievement Italy, has supported the “Io e l’economia - Comunità e ambiente” (The economy and I - Community and environment) project, which is directed at middle schools.
During a series of meetings, led by company employees with the assistance of class teachers, pupils learn about a number of economic and ethical concepts that are linked to sustainability and citizens.
The play-based learning activities offered in this module are based on pupils’ day-to-day experiences, on their daily life together and on respecting rules, values and the expectations of others. Putting themselves in the shoes of some of the key figures that make up a community, the children act out the story of an imaginary society struggling with a number of environmental and social issues that are typical of a modern economy.
Only after carefully analysing the values at stake and the legitimate expectations of all the characters, will they be able to understand and defend the behaviour and requirements of all of the “stakeholders”.
“Io e l’economia – Comunità e ambiente” is part of a wide-ranging business education project that Junior Achievement - a non-profit association based in Milan - is developing with the cooperation of other large firms throughout Italy.
A sound business education, starting from the first years of school, gives people greater control over their choices, encourages them to express critical judgements and improves their welfare as citizens, workers and consumers.
The initiative follows a format that has been specially developed to fit into ERG and ISAB’s Corporate Responsibility initiatives dedicated to young people in the Syracuse area and it allows the experience and knowledge of those who work in industry to be passed on to schools in a mutual exchange of skills and resources.
To date, more than 500 pupils from the Syracuse area have taken part in these interactive and enjoyable lessons.

R.A.O.
R.A.O. (Rete di Assistenza Oncologica) - Oncological Care Network
A facility for the diagnosis and treatment of tumour pathologies modernised and made more efficient thanks to the collaboration between ERG and District Health Authority 8 of Syracuse.
The sophisticated Oncology Unit of the Avola-Noto Hospital, directed by Dott. Paolo Tralongo and located in Avola Hospital, has come back to its original premises, which have been suitably refurbished and modernised on a large scale in line with institutional accreditation directives with the help of grants from ERG.
The new premises, which accommodate both the day hospital and a residential ward with eight beds, will give cancer patients a better environment and more privacy. The department has also been equipped with a so-called “white chamber” for the preparation of antiblastic drugs in absolute safety and in compliance with current legislation.
The refurbishing and modernisation of the Oncology Department falls within the sphere of a wider project for collaboration between the Health Authority and ERG, whose purpose is to enhance healthcare services in the area with last year’s launch of the Oncological Care Network (RAO).
This new organisational model anticipated, in Syracuse province, the provisions of the new health services reform and, among other things, has led to an increase in employment and also an extension of clinical care for oncological patients at the Augusta and Lentini Hospitals.
