Lino Cardarelli

Lino Cardarelli has been appointed Senior Deputy Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean after having been economic and industrial Advisor to the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for MENA Countries.
Before that, he had the position, in Baghdad, at the PMO - Program Management Office - and IRMO - Iraqi Reconstruction Management Office where he served also as a coordinator of Donors Countries projects - as Special Assistant to the Director Dave Nash since January 2004 up to December 2004.
Mr.Cardarelli has more than 25 years of international experience having had responsibilities in large industrial corporations and financial institutions. During this experience, he was involved in the management of companies producing and marketing in heavy and specialty chemicals. pharmaceutical, engineering constructions, textiles, machine-tools and in the financing of significant projects and the acquisition of companies. His activities broiught him to work in Africa, in Middle East, in Latin America, in United States and in several countries in Europe: UK, France, Spain and Switzerland.
Mr. Caldarelli joined the Project Management Office from his position in the Italian Government where he was Senior Economic Advisor to the Italian Minister for Infrastructures and Transportation. While in that position, he actively partecipated to one the most significant and challenging projects in all transport infrastructures sectors: roads, ports, airports, railways that will engage Italy in investments as much as Euro 125billions in the next 10 years.
Prior to that, Mr. Cardarelli eas Chief Executive Officer, than General Manager and Managing Director of Montedison Group, at the time the second largest Industrial Corporation in Italy and one of the leaders in the world in fine chemicals, pharmaceuticals with the range of proprietary products. While in those positions he acted as Executive President in related companies: Incas Bonna Spa, a Construction & Engineering company with large interests in Saudi Arabia, Iraq and the Gulf; Cedar Trading S.A., a Suisse company, leader in trading of crude oil and other strategic raw materials; executive director of Erbamont and Ausimont, leading companies in pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals, both listed in the NYSE, in London and in other European financial markets.
Mr. Cardarelli, after this large industrial experience, moved to the financial sector and became firstly CEO of an Italian Merchant Bank and Board Member of other financial institutions in Switzerland, Great Britain, France and Luxembourg and, than, executive director of Banker's Trust Europe and President & CEO of Bankers Trust Italy S.p.A., prior this American bank was taken over by Deutsche Bank.
Mr. Cardarelli served as independent director in several Boards of public and family - owned corporations in Italy, in the USA and Europe (he resigned from those positions when he joined the Government in 2001) and he recently left his position of Independent director in the Stretto di Messina S.p.A. Board of Director, the company which has the task to realize the bridge to connect the Sicilia region to its mainland, one of the most challenging construction and engineering projects of the world.
Mr. Cardarelli has also partecipated actively in Industrial Institutions: among others, he has been member of the executive committee of the Italian Confederation of Industry; chairman of American Chamber of Commerce in Italy and Member of the European Network; deputy chairman of the Italian - Chinese Chamber of Commerce; executive director of the International Foreign Bankers Association in Italy.
Mr. Cardarelli graduated in Economics as the University of Parma (Italy); he served as researcher an assistant in economic and financial subjects while he taught financial and industrial strategy in a Private University in Ancona and lectured in several Universities.
He is now also Associate at the Link University of Malta in Rome, teaching finance and strategy at the MBA Seminars.
Mr. Cardarelli attended a semester at the London School of Economics (London), La Sorbonne (Paris), at the Salzsburg Seminar in American Studies (Salzsburg, Austria); holds a specialization at the Harvard Business School (Boston) in Strategic Finance and has a Degree in Business Development at the IMEDE University in Losanne (Switzerland).
